Apple Country's Portraiture

I have children, two in fact, both girls. I love children! My favorite shoots involve children. The image on the right was taken of my daughter Molly during the summer of 2007 at one of the gardens at Minuteman National Park. It's a lovely site for classic portraits, with iron gates, walls, bridges–does the North Bridge ring a bell?–and fields aplenty. The light was quite nice and I used some slight fill from a the white side of my 60" reflector. Looks silly, but I use them all the time. If you ever get to watch a fashion shoot out on a beach you will see assistants holding really large reflectors or they will be mounted. They work great. It feels like you are sculpting the light whereas with fill flash you are more or less lighting everything. Both work, but I tend to prefer reflectors to flash. These are the kind of classic images I like to produce. This image was printed onto a 20x30" canvas gallery wrap and hangs in my home studio space lit by a gimbal halogen. In the original image there are nice subtle shadows on her face and dappled light on her dress. If you are looking for classic portraits, I do several at North Shore beaches (e.g., Wingaersheek in Gloucester) in July and August late in the day.

In the fall, Stow, MA is a wonderful location for classic portraits. We have beautiful old stone walls with changing leaves as backdrops, apple-laden trees with old wooden ladders, stunning fall flower displays at our local golf courses. In the spring we have flowering apple trees and tulips and colorful shrubs.

In addition to classic children portraits as a primary focus, I also shoot classic and photojournalism-type portraits of children, babies, families, seniors, sports, corporate, environmental and engagements. I have studio lights and can accommodate you by bringing my studio lighting gear to your home. This usually makes the experience more relaxing for children (and even adults). Also, portraits using your home decor can give a personal connection to your images.
